Never underestimate the value of using a bunch of mates and local tradies to complete a major renovation quickly and efficiently. By Frank Leggett

Augello’s Ristorante & Pizzeria is situated directly opposite the Mooloolaba beach in Queensland and has gone through three major renovations since opening in 1995.

“About five years ago we purchased the freehold on the building,” says Simon Best who co-owns the business with former NRL footballer, Billy Moore. “At the beginning of 2018, we decided it was time to update the premises in order to keep everything nice and bright.

“My plan was to fit new bathrooms, change the design of the balcony and add new glass, add sound baffles to the roof, put in new fans, new cabinetry in the bar, new shelving, a three-door fridge in the kitchen, new fridge doors in the bar, a new entrance, knock down a few walls downstairs, all new paint throughout the space, new flooring on the stairs and a new entrance.”

Obviously, Augello’s would be required to shut down during the renovation. At the same time, Best was well aware of the importance of weekend trade and the financial hit the business would take by missing out on that turnover. There was only one answer.

“We completed everything in five days,” says Best. “We closed on Monday and were open for business again by the following Friday night.”

It should also be mentioned that Mooloolaba received a week of rain while the renovation was taking place. On top of this, Best designed and project-managed the entire renovation himself, using the skills of local tradespeople.

“Paul Cross Constructions was an essential part of the process due to the different number of trades required,” says Best.

They booked in the various tradespeople three months in advance and told them to block off that week. There were 17 tradespeople on site on the first morning. The rain slowed down the exterior work, but by Friday night, the renovations were 90 per cent completed.

Augello’s now has a clean and uncluttered look that features neutral colours and lots of timber elements. It is a classic coastal eatery, offering al fresco dining on the lower deck with a 180-degree beach panorama. Upstairs, patrons enjoy a 270-degree view of the ocean.

The floorplan and the layout of the kitchen remained unchanged, having worked beautifully for the past 23 years. The furniture was updated about five years ago and was simply re-installed into the finished space. Dimmers were attached to all the lights to set the mood for the various types of clientele.

Augello’s renovation was carefully planned, completed in record time and had minimal impact on regular customers and hungry holidaymakers.
